What we do
We teach Shorin Ryu Karate as our main karate style. This descends directly from the teachings of Hobbs Sensei, who was the direct student of Toma Seiki and Toma Shian, from Okinawa, for many years. This style is known as Sukunai Hayashi Shorin Ryu (also known as Kyan Ha Shorin Ryu and/or Chubu Shorin Ryu) .
The Dentokan Aikijujutsu syllabus is based on the Hakko Ryu teachings of Okuyama Sensei and Irie Sensei direct to Hobbs Sensei. It traces its origin in a continuous stream from Daito-Ryu, through Hakko-Ryu and KoKoDo into its present form. The system utilizes the Hakko-Ryu/KoKoDo waza (techniques) lists of Shodan Gi, Nidan Gi, Sandan Gi, Yondan Gi, Shihan Gi, Kaiden Gi, and Sandaikichu Gi to establish a firm base for further understanding and development. Malpas Sensei has Menkyo Kaiden in this art.

Dentokan Aikijujutsu
The Kobudo (Old Martial Way) / Kobujutsu (Old Martial Art) practiced within the Dentokan is a combination of several different Ryu/Ha (Styles/Methods) now widely recognized and accepted within the broader martial arts community. The kata preserve the teachings of most of the legendary kobujutsu masters (Odo, Taira, Kina, Kuniba, Ufuchiku, Toma, Tokumine, Nakamoto, Sakagami, Velez, Motobu). Weapons include bo, tonfa, sai, kama, nunchaku, eiku, nunte, tekko, techu, rochin tinbe.
Okinawan Kobujutsu
We teach Goju Ryu Karate as an additional style. This follows the direct line from Nakamoto Ki'ichi on Okinawa, the last surviving student of Miyagi Sensei. Nakamoto Sensei is stil teaching today at the Okinawa-kan, Okinawa City, Japan. Dentokan students and seniors make regular visits to his dojo.

We practice Motobu-ha Shito Ryu Karate which is a direct link to the Kuniba line. Hobbs Sensei has trained in Shito Ryu since the 1960s, being awarded his shodan in 1969 by Kuniba Shogo. We have maintained that link and Hobbs Sensei was graded to hachidan Hanshi by Kuniba Kozo in 2017. Malpas Sensei is also direct;ly graded by Kuniba Kozo and we now teach the style throughout the Dentokan.

Dentokan Iaijutsu comprises the koryu style of Mugai Ryu, and the gendai styles of Toyama Ryu, Keishi Ryu and the Batto-ho set of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu
